Getting started right (the short version)

Hole size and depth decide tuber quality. Dig 20–30 cm deep. Place each sucker so it touches the bottom of its own hole. Use clean irrigation water and keep the farm weed-free.

  • 500 g well-decomposed farmyard manure per hole at planting
  • Goat or cow manure top-up after 2 weeks (best manures for nduma)
  • Avoid chicken or pig manure - poor tuber bulking and weak returns
  • Mulch with grass; water for at least 6 months after planting
  • About 30% of potential yield is lost if irrigation is insufficient
